What is trip cancellation insurance and how does it work?

Trip cancellation insurance reimburses you for prepaid, non-refundable trip costs (flights, hotels, tours) if you must cancel before departure for a covered reason such as illness, injury, or severe weather.

  • Covers cancellation due to: unexpected illness/injury, family emergencies, severe weather, jury duty, job loss (some policies), and other listed "covered reasons"

  • Does not cover cancellation for boredom, changing your mind, or not wanting to travel

  • Reimbursement typically covers 100% of insured prepaid, non-refundable trip costs

  • A common upgrade is Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR), which reimburses 50-75% of costs and must be purchased within 10-21 days of initial trip deposit

  • Buy trip cancellation insurance when you book your trip for maximum coverage
