What is trip cancellation insurance and how does it work?
Trip cancellation insurance reimburses you for prepaid, non-refundable trip costs (flights, hotels, tours) if you must cancel before departure for a covered reason such as illness, injury, or severe weather.
Covers cancellation due to: unexpected illness/injury, family emergencies, severe weather, jury duty, job loss (some policies), and other listed "covered reasons"
Does not cover cancellation for boredom, changing your mind, or not wanting to travel
Reimbursement typically covers 100% of insured prepaid, non-refundable trip costs
A common upgrade is Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR), which reimburses 50-75% of costs and must be purchased within 10-21 days of initial trip deposit
Buy trip cancellation insurance when you book your trip for maximum coverage
