Does travel insurance cover terrorism or civil unrest events?

Most comprehensive policies include coverage for trip cancellation or interruption due to terrorism or civil unrest, but typically only if the event occurs within 30 days of your trip and in your destination city.

  • Covered if: terrorism occurs in your destination city within 30 days of scheduled travel

  • Does not cover: fear of terrorism in cities where no event has occurred

  • Some policies include coverage for evacuation from areas with civil unrest

  • Travel warnings from State Department may trigger coverage if your destination becomes unsafe

  • "Political evacuation" coverage is available as add-on from some providers

  • Coverage limits: up to full trip cost for cancellation, with generous evacuation coverage optional

  • Standard policies may exclude acts of war or "declared or undeclared war" read the fine print
