Does travel insurance cover flight cancellations or delays?

Yes, but with conditions. Coverage typically requires a delay of 5-12 hours and the delay must be for a covered reason (weather, mechanical issues). Policies purchased after a storm is forecast will not cover that storm.

  • Travel delay coverage reimburses meals, hotels, and transportation after qualifying delay (typically 5-12 hours)

  • Daily limits usually range from $150-$200 per day, with maximums of $2,000-$3,000

  • "Known event" exclusion: if a storm is forecast before you buy your policy, you're not covered

  • Some comprehensive policies cover canceled flights up to full ticket cost, plus hotel and meals

  • Credit card coverage often has longer delay triggers (6-12 hours) compared to standalone policies (3-6 hours)

  • Does not cover delays caused by crew shortages, air traffic control, or other non-covered reasons unless specified
