Can I bring a BBQ grill on a road trip?

Yes. Portable BBQs are legal to transport. Propane canisters of reasonable size (under 5 gallons) are allowed. Grills must be clean and cool before transport.

  • Charcoal grills: allowed, store charcoal in sealed container

  • Propane grills: allowed, but check campground propane restrictions

  • Propane canisters under 5 gallons legal to transport in all states

  • Never transport a hot or warm grill (fire risk)

  • Some tunnels and ferries restrict propane canisters

  • Leave grill at campsite when visiting attractions (not left in hot car)
