Can I bring a diesel car into a low-emission zone in Europe?

It depends on the city. Many European cities have low-emission zones (LEZs) that restrict older diesel vehicles. You need a Crit'Air sticker in France, Umweltsplakette in Germany, or equivalent permit.

  • Germany: all vehicles need a green Umweltsplakette (emissions sticker) to enter LEZs

  • France: Crit'Air sticker required (order online before travel, €4.71)

  • London: Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charges apply for older diesel vehicles (£12.50 per day)

  • Milan, Italy: Area B LEZ restricts Euro 4 and older diesel vehicles

  • Brussels, Belgium: LEZ applies to diesel vehicles Euro 5 and older (2025 standards)

  • Fines for entering without permit range from €80 to €500

  • Most rental cars from major European airports already have required stickers (confirm at pickup)
