Can I bring a GPS device to Russia?

Yes. Consumer GPS devices (Garmin, TomTom) are allowed. However, GPS trackers with satellite communication (InReach, SPOT) are restricted.

  • Standard navigation GPS devices are permitted for personal use

  • GLONASS (Russian GPS system) is the primary navigation system in Russia

  • GPS devices with two-way satellite communication (InReach, SPOT) require special permits

  • Military zones and certain border areas ban all GPS devices and photography

  • Register your GPS device with customs if carrying high-value equipment

  • Avoid recording tracks in restricted areas, laws are strictly enforced
