Can I bring a drone to Costa Rica?

Yes. Drones under 25kg allowed. Registration with DGAC Costa Rica required for all drones. Flying over national parks, wildlife refuges, and protected areas is strictly prohibited.

  • Registration with DGAC (Dirección General de Aviación Civil) required online

  • No-fly zones: all national parks and protected areas, airports (5km), San José city center, government buildings, beaches during turtle nesting season

  • Manuel Antonio, Corcovado, Tortuguero national parks: no drone flights

  • Maximum altitude 120m, must maintain visual line of sight

  • Liability insurance recommended

  • Fines for flying in protected areas start at $1,000 USD
