Can I use my driver's license in Europe?

Yes, you can use your US driver's license in Europe, but it is not always sufficient on its own. For short visits, most European countries accept your valid US license. However, more than a dozen countries technically require you to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside it. Rental companies may also require an IDP. For stays beyond six months, you will generally need to exchange your US license for a local one.

  • Europe (EU/EEA): US licenses are recognized for short visits, but an IDP is required in Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Estonia.
  • Germany: A US license is valid for up to six months after entering the country. For stays up to 364 days, an extension is possible with proof of departure. After that, a German license is required.
  • Italy: US tourists must carry an IDP or an official Italian translation alongside their US license. Fines for driving without one can exceed €400.
  • Ireland and the UK: Visitors may drive with a valid US license for short visits. Residents must obtain an Irish or UK license.
  • Eastern Europe: Hungary specifically requires a certified Hungarian translation of your license. An IDP serves this purpose and is the easiest certified translation to obtain.

Detailed Answer

Do You Need an International Driving Permit?

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a translation of your US driver's license into multiple languages, including German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. It is not a standalone document. You must carry your original US license alongside the IDP. The IDP is valid for one year and costs approximately $20.

Only two organizations in the United States are authorized to issue an IDP: the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance. Be wary of third-party websites that charge additional fees.

The following European countries require US drivers to carry an IDP: Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Estonia. Croatia and Serbia are also often included in this list. Even where an IDP is not legally required, many rental car companies ask for one at pickup.

Country-by-Country Rules

Germany

A valid US driver's license can be used in Germany for the first six months after entering the country. Tourists and visitors who do not establish residence can use their US license for the duration of their stay.

For US citizens planning to stay in Germany for more than six months but less than one year, the license can be extended up to 364 days. You must notify your local driver's registration office before the end of the first six months and provide an official translation of your US license and proof that you will leave Germany before a year has passed.

For indefinite stays, a German license is required after six months. Whether you can simply exchange your US license or must take tests depends on your state of origin. Drivers from 27 states and Puerto Rico can exchange their license directly. Drivers from 10 states with partial agreements must pass a written test. Drivers from 13 states with no reciprocity agreement, including California and New York, must pass both written and road tests.

Italy

Americans visiting Italy as tourists should obtain an IDP before leaving the US. Tourists may also use their valid US license if accompanied by an official translation in Italian. Americans registered as residents must apply for an Italian license within one year of registration.

There is no reciprocal recognition agreement between the United States and Italy. Bearers of US licenses cannot exchange their license directly for an Italian one. They must complete the standard requirements: a written test, a driving test, a medical examination, and relevant documents. Police can issue fines of €400 or more if you cannot produce an IDP or official translation.

Czech Republic

Short-term visitors holding a US driver's license may drive in the Czech Republic if they also carry an IDP. The IDP is issued for US licenses and expires in one year. Long-term residents staying more than one year and permanent residents must obtain a Czech driver's license within three months of receiving their long-term stay or permanent residence.

Obtaining a Czech license requires successfully completing a driver competency test and meeting other conditions such as age and health. Applications are processed by the Driver Registry of the municipal authorities.

Hungary

US-licensed drivers in Hungary are required to possess a certified Hungarian translation of their domestic license. An IDP serves as a certified Hungarian translation and is likely the easiest one to obtain. Be sure to get one before leaving the United States.

Ireland and the United Kingdom

Visitors may drive in Ireland with a full, valid US driving license for the category of vehicle. Someone who is resident in Ireland must have an Irish or EU license to drive on public roads. Ireland is exploring a potential license exchange agreement with certain US states, but this is not yet in place.

In the United Kingdom, visitors with a valid US license can drive for up to 12 months from their last entry. After that, a UK license is required.

Spain and Greece

Spain requires an IDP alongside a US license. Rental companies in Spain frequently ask for one. Greece also requires an IDP, and rental companies are strict about this requirement.

Rental Car Requirements

Even where an IDP is not legally required, rental companies may ask for one. Sixt, Enterprise, and other major rental agencies list the IDP as a required or strongly recommended document for US drivers. Enterprise locations in Greece state that renters from the USA do not require an IDP, but this varies by location. It is always safer to carry one.

When you pick up a rental car, expect to present your valid US driver's license, your IDP, your passport, and a credit card in the main driver's name.

Real Traveler Experiences

"I rented a car in Italy without an IDP and the rental agent refused to give me the car. I had to find a AAA office in Rome to get one, which took a full day. Now I always get my IDP before leaving the US." US traveler, travel review

"The police in Hungary asked for a Hungarian translation of my license during a routine traffic stop. My IDP satisfied the requirement. Without it, I would have been fined." US traveler, forum post

"I drove in Ireland for two weeks with my US license and had no problems. The rental company did not ask for an IDP, but I had one just in case." US traveler, Reddit

Pro Tips

  • Get an IDP before leaving the United States. They cannot be issued abroad.
  • Apply through AAA or the American Automobile Touring Alliance, the only authorized providers.
  • Carry your IDP and your original US license together at all times. The IDP is not valid on its own.
  • Check the specific requirements for every country on your itinerary. Rules vary significantly.
  • If you plan to stay in Europe for more than six months, research the license exchange process for that country before you go.
  • Rental companies may require an IDP even where local law does not. Carry one to avoid being turned away at the counter.
  • The IDP is valid for one year. It can be renewed by mail through AAA.
