Does my credit card already include travel insurance?

Many premium credit cards offer travel insurance, but coverage is often limited compared to standalone policies. Credit card coverage typically has lower limits, more exclusions, and may be secondary (paying after other insurance).

  • Coverage varies widely by card, not all cards offer travel protections

  • Credit card benefits often have: lower coverage limits, longer delay triggers (6-12 hours vs 3-6 hours), and limited medical coverage

  • Credit card coverage is often "secondary"  you must file with primary insurance first

  • Only expenses charged to that specific card are eligible for reimbursement

  • Pre-existing conditions are typically not covered

  • Annual limits may cap coverage across multiple trips

  • Credit card coverage does not include medical evacuation or comprehensive medical benefits in most cases
