Can I enter the US from Canada without a passport?

No, US citizens cannot re-enter the US from Canada without a valid US passport (book or card). Foreign nationals need proper visa or ESTA.

  • US citizens: passport book (air), passport card or Enhanced Driver's License (land/sea)

  • US permanent residents: Green Card is sufficient for land/sea re-entry

  • Foreign nationals: must meet US entry requirements (ESTA or visa)

  • NEXUS card is accepted for expedited entry

  • Birth certificate alone is no longer accepted at land borders (law changed 2009)
