Can I bring a service dog on a plane for free?

Yes, Service dogs (including guide dogs and hearing dogs) fly for free on US airlines. Emotional support animals do not qualify and are treated as pets.

  • Service dogs fly free on all US airlines under the Air Carrier Access Act, no fee for the animal

  • Airlines may require a U.S. Department of Transportation Service Animal Air Transportation Form submitted 48 hours before travel

  • Service dog must fit within your foot space and cannot block the aisle

  • Emotional support animals are no longer treated as service animals (rule changed December 2020)

  • For international travel, check destination country's animal import rules before flying

  • Service dogs in training may not be accepted, check individual airline policies
