Can I bring a wheelchair battery on a plane?

Yes. Airlines must accept battery-powered wheelchairs as checked baggage. Non-spillable batteries can stay attached. Spillable batteries may need removal.

  • Non-spillable batteries (sealed, labeled) can remain attached to the wheelchair

  • Spillable (wet) batteries require removal if the wheelchair cannot remain upright

  • For batteries that must be removed, the airline must provide packaging upon request

  • Check in one hour before general public check-in time for wheelchair transport

  • Damaged or leaking batteries will not be transported

  • Bring spare wheelchair batteries in carry-on (must follow lithium battery rules)
