Can I bring a portable oxygen concentrator on a plane?

Yes. FAA-approved portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) are allowed on flights. You must carry sufficient spare batteries for the entire flight duration.

  • POCs do not contain or generate oxygen, they concentrate it from ambient air

  • Airlines require advance notice (usually 48 hours) before flying with a POC

  • The device must be FAA-approved, check the airline's list of approved models

  • Spare batteries must be in carry-on luggage only, never in checked bags

  • Batteries must be protected from damage and short circuits (tape over terminals or in original packaging)

  • You cannot use the aircraft's electrical outlets to power your POC

  • Not all airlines allow POCs on all aircraft types, confirm before booking
