When is rainy season in Thailand?

July to October, but it's usually 1 to 2 hours of afternoon rain, not all day.

  • Cheapest flights and hotels during rainy season
  • Phuket rains more than Koh Samui in low season
  • November to February is peak dry season

Detailed Answer

How It Works

Thailand has two distinct seasons: dry and wet. The wet season runs roughly May to October and is driven by the southwest monsoon. The dry season runs November to April and is when most tourists visit. But the picture is more nuanced than that.

Most of the rain falls in short, heavy afternoon bursts of one to two hours. Mornings are often sunny and clear. Many travelers visit during the wet season specifically to save money and find fewer crowds, and they manage perfectly fine with a lightweight rain jacket and flexible planning.

Thailand is also not one climate. The country stretches over 1,600 kilometers from north to south. The Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan) and the Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta) are hit by different monsoons at different times. Knowing which coast you are visiting changes everything about when you should go.

Season by Season at a Glance

  • November to February: best overall weather, dry and cool, peak tourist season, highest prices
  • March to April: hot and dry, Songkran water festival in April, still very good conditions
  • May to June: start of southwest monsoon, Andaman Coast gets wetter, Gulf Coast still manageable
  • July to August: rainy season in full swing on the Andaman Coast, Gulf Coast remains drier and sunny
  • September to October: wettest months overall, some islands close resorts, lowest prices of the year

By Region: When to Go Where

  • Bangkok and Central Thailand: wet season May to October, best visited November to April
  • Chiang Mai and the North: wet season May to October, smoke season February to April, best time November to January
  • Phuket and Andaman Coast (Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi): wet season May to October, roughest seas August to September, best time November to April
  • Koh Samui and Gulf Coast (Koh Tao, Koh Phangan): opposite pattern to Andaman, wettest October to December, best time January to August
  • Kanchanaburi and the West: wet season May to October, waterfalls at peak in September and October

What You Need to Know

  • Rainy season rain is typically short and heavy, not prolonged gray drizzle like northern Europe
  • September and October are the wettest months and some smaller islands partially close
  • Koh Samui is the only major beach destination with a different wet season, it rains most in November and December
  • Phuket during rainy season has roughest seas, some beaches close for swimming due to red flag conditions
  • Hotel prices in rainy season can be 30 to 50% lower than peak season
  • Flights from Europe, the US, and Australia are significantly cheaper May to October
  • Chiang Mai has a smoke season from February to April caused by agricultural burning, air quality can be very poor
  • Songkran (Thai New Year water festival) falls in mid-April and is the busiest travel period domestically

Is Rainy Season Worth It

  • Yes if you are budget-focused, flexible, and visiting Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or the Gulf Coast islands
  • Yes if you want lush green scenery, dramatic skies, and empty beaches in the morning
  • Yes for the Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Tao) where July and August are actually dry and sunny
  • No if you want guaranteed beach days on the Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi), go November to April instead
  • No in September and October for any beach destination, these are the riskiest months

Real Traveler Experiences

"Visited Chiang Mai in August expecting rain every day. It rained for about an hour each afternoon then cleared. Temples were empty, cost half what my friend paid in December. Zero regrets."  Reddit r/ThailandTourism

"Made the mistake of booking Phuket in September. Rain and wind for three days straight, beach was closed. Moved to Koh Samui on the Gulf side and it was completely sunny. Always check which coast you are on."  TripAdvisor review

"Bangkok in July was hot and humid but the street food scene is year round. Caught one big storm at night. Everything dried out by morning. Great trip."  Lonely Planet forum

Pro Tips

  • Pack a compact rain jacket or poncho, an umbrella is awkward in tropical downpours and wind
  • If visiting during rainy season, book refundable accommodation where possible so you can move between coasts if weather turns
  • Check the Thai Meteorological Department forecast at tmd.go.th for current conditions before finalizing your itinerary
  • For beach holidays, the Gulf Coast in July and August is one of the best-kept secrets in Thai travel, sunny and significantly cheaper than Phuket
  • Songkran in April means roads, buses, and trains are packed with domestic travelers, book transport well in advance if traveling during that week
  • Avoid Chiang Mai February to April if you have respiratory issues, smoke season air quality regularly reaches hazardous levels
